Sexual Transmitted Diseases(STDs)
There are a lot of myths out there about sexual transmitted diseases or STDs. These myths are simply untrue and can be very
harmful if you believe them. Here are a few of those myths and why they are not true.
Perhaps the most significant myth associated with sexually transmitted diseases is that a person can have safe sex. The term
"safe sex" has been used with abandon by many well intentioned people in recent years. However, the reality is that by using
the term safe sex, some people actually are lulled into a sense that there are ways in which you can have sex with multiple
partners provided you "follow the rules of safe sex."
Safe sex is the first myth we will address. The idea of having safe sex is a myth because it convinces people that there are
ways to have multiple partners and not contract an STD, as long as you follw the safe sex rules. This is just not true.
Even the scientific side of sex says that if you have more than one partner it is not safe. The real term safer sex because
you can never have completely safe sex without being in a relationship where you only have sex with one person for your
entire life. Safer sex is basically using a condom and the other protections that are available. This will give you a
better chance of not getting a sexually transmitted disease, but it is still a possibility because condoms can break.
The next myth we will deal with is how HIV is contracted. There is a lot of information available on HIV and AIDS, but there
are still a lot of people that just don't have any idea about HIV. There are still some people that believe you can get HIV
by being close to an infected person and this is just not true. The only way you can contract HIV is through infected blood,
semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. If one of these fluids makes it into your blood stream, then you can contract
HIV, but that is the only way.
Now you have a little more information about sexual transmitted diseases and you are a bit better informed. Remember that
there is no such thing as safe sex, only safer sex, and also know that you can contract HIV from having sex with someone that
has it. Be safer and make sure you are using condoms each and every time.
