The key to a long swim season is to keep your pool good and hot and you can do this with a combination of a solar pool heater and an electric or gas pool heater. Use the solar heater during the bulk of the season and use it on the very sunny days in the off season as well.

By mixing in the other heater when it starts to get cooler you will be able to keep your pool at a good swimming temperature while the temperature of the air drops. You should be able to extend your swimming season until the daytime temperature is below 60 degrees, maybe even longer.
