As of 2005 you are entitled to, by law, a free copy of your credit report once every year. This new law has caused a lot of confusion on how to get your free credit report.

There are plenty of websites that offer a so called free credit report, but they are always asking for credit card information and it seems like a free credit report scam to many people.

There is nothing to be afraid of with most of these websites. Sure there are still scams out there, and there always will be, but they are pretty easy to spot.

The reason they ask for your credit card number is because they are giving you a free trial of their credit monitoring service along with your free credit report. You can try their service for 30 days and if you like it they will automatically charge your card and you can continue to used their service.

If you do not like it you have every right to cancel it and keep your free credit report.

Of course, if you do not feel comfortable with this there is another way to get your free credit report. You can write one of the three, or all three, of the credit bureaus and ask for a free copy.

In fact if you have applied for a loan or a credit card recently and have been turned down, then you can use the turndown letter to get a free copy of your report. Either way there is no free credit report scam and you need to see your credit report at least twice a year to make sure everything is in order.
